"By making you a doll, your beauty can last forever! Look at these children! Beautiful, yes? Preserved just as they were when alive! These are the fruits of the Drevis family research!"

- Alfred during the endgame of Normal Mode

Alfred Drevis is the husband of Monika Drevis and the father of Aya Drevis, serving as both the person who needs to be rescued, as well as the primary antagonist. He is a mad scientist who has been turning people into dolls alongside his assistant, Maria. Once his late-wife comes back from the dead as a vengeful ghost, his daughter goes on a quest to save him.

Appearance[]

Alfred has somewhat messy short brown hair. The top portion of his face is constantly veiled by an ominous shadow, with his glasses fully covering his eyes. Alfred's eyes are not seen until the very end of the game, where they are shown to be a bright brown.

During most of the game, he's mostly seen wearing a white lab coat, with a black t-shirt underneath and grey pants. He sometimes sports a mask when performing his "surgeries."

In certain flashbacks, he's shown wearing a black suit with a white shirt underneath, black pants, and a green tie.

In a bonus cutscene that plays if the player obtained the True Ending, as well as collects all 21 Gems (in the original/2.02 version) or all 20 Gems (In the 2020 remake), Alfred's hair is revealed to have turned purple. His skin has turned a very pale light-purple as well, though this is only barely noticeable since the player only sees him from the back.

Personality[]

MF2020AlfredChainsaw1

Alfred is a psychopath who is obsessed with preserving beauty by making dolls out of living humans. He tends to lure in unsuspecting people with promises of goodwill and intention, such as taking in homeless people or asking someone to work for him and his family. Once they take the bait, He'll treat them kindly for a bit before eventually revealing his true colors, after which he'll use them to perform his horrific experiments.

Even during his youth, Alfred was not a good person. He often killed small animals for fun, which his mother disapproved of. When he finally grew tired of her lectures, he decided to silence her with a kitchen knife. Afterwards, he wiped the blood off of her face, upon which he noticed how pretty her dead face looked. This event would lead him into his obsession with preserving beauty.

In spite of his cruelty, he'll often spare people whom he finds either "helpful" or "useful." His wife is one such person, as she owned a large estate and mansion, as well as her grandfather's research into turning humans into dolls, the latter which fed into his obsession. Another one would be Maria, his assistant. He intended to turn her into a doll, but decided to keep her alive when he found out how good her medical skills are. However, once he's finished with them, or if they happen to do something that he perceives as a slight against him, Alfred will nonchalantly kill them in cold blood.

Despite the overwhelming macabre personality, there is a surprisingly lighter side to him. Though he did kill his own mother, it's made quite clear Alfred loved her as any son would. While trying to raise his daughter, he began to notice Aya appeared to be going down the same path he did when he was a child. Not wanting her to turn out like he did, he attempted to raise her to be good while teaching her right from wrong.

The mad doctor is also implied to have a dark sense of humor. During his chase with Aya, Alfred rather childishly attempted to scare his daughter by shouting "Boo!" when he managed to open the door slightly, before he fully busted it open. He also viewed their chase as nothing more than a game of tag.

One diary entry implies that there is a part of Alfred that regrets how he turned out, though beyond trying to raise Aya to be good, he makes no effort to better himself.

History[]

Prior to Mad Father[]

Alfred was born to an unnamed woman, and he loved her as any child would their mother. At some point, he killed small animals for fun, which would mark the beginning of his dark interests. He often did this while his mother was out, and hid their bodies in drawers. His mother was not happy when she discovered them, and when she learned he was the one who was responsible, she gave him a harsh scolding. Displeased with this, Alfred decided to silence her with a kitchen knife. Afterwards, he would wipe the blood off of her face, whereupon he discovered that her dead face looked very pretty. However, he soon felt scared and ashamed at what he had done, fleeing across the ocean to Northern Germany. Try as he might, he couldn't forget his mother's "pretty dead face." This would lead him to killing various other people to see their dead faces.

At some point in his life, he meets a young woman named Monika Drevis. He attempts to kill her, but spares her for unknown reasons. This event causes the young lass to fall deeply in love with him, and after sending him many letters - including one that had a map to her mansion - he eventually relented and decided to visit her. Eventually, he would marry into her family's name, where they would produce their only child: a girl they named Aya.

While raising Aya, Alfred quickly notices that she's going down the same path as he was. Not wanting her to end up like him, he begins to try and raise her to be good while teaching her right from wrong. However, his attempts are constantly - albeit unknowingly - undermined by his wife, who wants Aya to become as cruel as Alfred in order to continue her family's legacy. Because of this, Alfred feels that the only way to preserve her innocence would be to turn her into a doll, thus he begins to wait until she's of a certain age to enact his plan.

During all of this, Alfred would continue his work on turning people into dolls. One such example was a young girl named Ines. After taking her in, Alfred promised she would be a part of his family, even introducing her to his infant daughter Aya, saying that'll Ines will be her big sister. However, after presumably inviting her to his lab for a "check-up," he kills the young girl with no remorse.

About four years before the events of the game begin, Alfred encounters a young woman lying on the street, weakly begging anyone to give her food. Thinking she'd make a great doll with some work, he invites her into his home. Afterwards he asks her to rest in one of the jail cells for the night, as he wanted to introduce her to his family later on. The next day, he discovered that the woman managed to completely heal up a "patient" of his that was near-death. Not wanting her talents to go to waste, he asked for the woman's name, to which she responded Maria. He then asks her to become his assistant, to which she agreed without any hesitation.

Soon, Alfred and Maria's relationship soon turns into an affair, which Alfred's wife eventually finds out about. Despite that, she never confronts the two about it, though she begins to avoid Maria whenever she can.

About a year before the events of the game begins, Alfred and Maria have a small discussion about Aya, with the maid noting how ladylike the girl has become while Aflred notes that once she's "a bit more ripe," they'll turn her into a doll. However, his wife overhears that, and confronts him about it, threatening to leave with Aya if he goes through with it. Not wanting her to do whatever she pleases, Alfred stabs Monika with no hesitation. Maria - who was elsewhere while that was going on - rushes on over to Monika and asks Alfred why he killed her, to wish he responds that it was for the sake of Aya's future. He then instructs her to lie to Aya about Monika's death and claim she passed away from her illness. Maria hesitates on doing this, but reluctantly agrees to it, since she's loyal to the mad doctor.

Sometime after that, Alfred takes in a young blond boy named Robin, who had recently lost his parents. He insists to Robin to view him and Aya as family, though the boy is somewhat reluctant to do so. Before his daughter could learn about - or even interact with - Robin, Alfred would kill him like all the others before. What Alfred didn't know was that afterwards, his wife Monika, who had come back as a ghost, would revive the young lad, as she needed him to enact her plans for the upcoming anniversary of her death.

During the events of Mad Father[]

On the eve of the anniversary of his wife's death, Alfred's assistant, Maria, voices her concerns about Aya, noting that she's aware of their relationship, as well as her concerns that his daughter isn't fond of her. Alfred brushes them aside, and simply request that she looks after Aya, since she'll be the most precious doll of all. On the stroke of midnight, Monika's ghost arrives and incapacitates Maria. As she grabs Alfred, he lets out a scream, which alerts his daughter, Aya.

Once Aya arrives at the Basement 1F Incubation Room, Alfred is scene near the feet of his wife. Though the young girl is happy to find her father, she's more surprised at seeing her, and cries out to her. Monika ignores her, and drags Alfred away with her deeper in the basement's depths.

At the Other World, Maria arrives and attempts to fight Monika, but ends up getting defeated. When Aya arrives, Monika claims she's after Alfred to put an end to what he's done to others. Aya isn't fooled, since her mother knew Alfred more than anyone, and states that the real reason has to be because he's been hanging out with Maria. Monika decides to run with that, and claims she want to drag him away with her to the afterlife. Aya begs to be taken with them, but Monika refuses, wanting Aya to live a happy life. The young girl then manages to grab Alfred, where she has to decide whether to save him, or respect her mother's wish to take Alfred away with her. Ultimately, she chooses her father, and uses some Magic Water - that she obtained earlier from a mysterious man named Ogre - on her. As Monika begins to fade away, Alfred, his daughter, and his assistant return to the Drevis Mansion.

Aya hugs her father, content that things turned out okay. Alfred responds that they'll visit their mother first thing in the morning, with the claim that her spirit must've been lonely. However, unbeknown to Alfred, Monika had just enough power left to reveal the truth to her daughter: that Alfred killed her because he wants to turn Aya into a doll. When Aya begins to back away from him, he asks her why she appears to be afraid of him. Thats' when she accidentally discovers her mother's corpse. Realizing his daughter now knows the truth, Alfred begins to rant and rave about how he'll preserve her beauty, even asking her what kind of doll she'd like to be. As his daughter begins to flee, Alfred grabs his chainsaw and pursues after her.

During their chase, Alfred and Aya arrive at the room where Maria was. Alfred yelled at his assistant to capture Aya, but she fails to react in time, allowing Aya to escape, though Maia begins to pursue the young girl as well. At the Basement 2F Mortuary, Alfred catches up to Maria, asking her where Aya is. Upon hearing that his assistant lost her, he beguns prepping his chainsaw, clearly displeased with her answer. Maria tries to suggest they look elsewhere, but Alfred pays her no heed, attacking her leg with his chainsaw while calling her "useless garbage." He then rushes on to the next room to look. Eventually, he realizes that Aya, as well as Maria - who his daughter decided to help since Alfred betrayed both of them - are headed to the Chapel. He rushes on over there as quick as he can, carelessly kicking aside Maria, who had collapsed earlier in her attempt to escape with Aya.

Upon arriving at the Chapel, Alfred spots Aya, who had her ankle caught by one of his dolls. Declaring that he and Aya will be together forever, Alfred prepares to lunge at Aya, only to get greeted by some thrown knives, courtesy of his former-assistant Maria. As he lay on the floor, Aya and Maria mourned his death, though this gave him enough time to recover and attempt to strike both of them down. However, his efforts were stopped by the timely arrival of Robin, who manages to kill the mad doctor.

Later on, as the mansion is burning to the ground, the mysterious man named Ogre approaches Alfred. The man admits that he admires "foolish humans," as one mad with desire is more fearsome than any demon. Claiming that Alfred may be the most foolish of all, he offers the scientist the opportunity to come with him to his world, where he could experiment to his heart's content. Alfred agrees, thus Ogre revives the doctor and takes them to his universe.

Should the player manage to obtain all 21 Gems (in the original/2.02 remake) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake), a bonus scene reveals that Alfred had managed to create an older clone of his daughter, Aya. Ogre, upon spotting it, notes that Alfred must still miss her, to which the scientist simply nods. Ogre then welcomes the woman as a new addition to his world, telling Alfred he hopes he can one day show her the world he originally came from before leaving. Alfred then gazes intently at his clone, telling her that they'll always be together.

During the events of Blood Mode[]

MF2020AlfredLingeringWill1

Alfred's Lingering Will, which serves as the final antagonist in "Blood Mode."

Illusions of Alfred make a few appearances in this mode. Additionally, the remnants of Alfred's lingering will and emotions for his daughter also serve as this mode's final antagonist. It resides in a dimension that acts as a recreation of the infamous night that changed Aya's life, When Aya's soul arrives there - which happened after she bit into a weirdly-colored apple that was given to her by an old woman in a black coat - she has to confront Alfred's Lingering Will and make peace with him.

An illusion of Alfred makes his first appearance in the Mansion 1F Hallway, where he scolds a very young Aya for injuring a bird, telling her she can't play with live animals like they're toys. When she asks why, he tells her it'll make her feel pain, which confuses her since she doesn't feel hurt. After telling her she'll know what he means when she's older, he points out that the bird she's holding is in pain. When she asks how to make the pain go away, he tells her to say "I'm sorry" to the bird, to which she does.

Another illusion of Alfred appears in the Basement 1F Laboratory, where he tells Maria if anything should happen to him, he entrusts everything to her. He also asks her to keep Aya safe, to which Maria ensures him that she'll protect Aya's future, and no one will stand in her way, not even his wife Monika. Alfred gives a light chuckle, noting how strong she's become.

Alfred's Diaries[]

Relationships[]

Aya Drevis[]

Aya is Alfred's daughter. Alfred adored his daughter, viewing her as his treasure, and often spent as much time as he could keeping her safe and spending time to play with her. Aya, in turn, looked up to her father, and often turned the other way when it came to his cruel experiments.

Alfred soon became worried when his daughter began displaying the same sociopathic tendencies like him. To that end, he attempted to teach her right from wrong, as well as dissuade her from killing animals for fun. He even tried to subtly get her to treat her pet rabbit, Snowball, well, to no avail. Worried that his treasure would become dirtied, he decided to turn her into a doll to preserve her innocence and beauty.

Although his plans end up in ruins, when he arrives in Ogre's world after the latter revived him, Alfred still longed for his daughter. Thus, he created an older clone of her to serve as a replacement.

His twisted-yet-genuine love for his daughter was so strong, that it manifested itself as its own entity in a world that served as a recreation of the infamous night, where the much-older Aya's soul ended up arriving after she bit into an odd-colored apple.

Monika Drevis[]

Monika is Alfred's wife. During their first meeting, he intended to kill her, but chose to spare her for unknown reasons. This caused the young lass to fall deeply in love with him, after which they would wed and have a daughter.

Though Monika's love for him was genuine, Alfred seemed to be somewhat indifferent towards her. He showed no regret or guilt when he cheated on her with Maria, nor did he hesitate to kill her when she learned that he intended to turn their child into a doll and threatened to leave with Aya. Though he did promise Aya that they'll visit Monika's grave to "soothe her spirit," this was more likely done to keep up the charade that Monika died of her illness.

Maria[]

Maria is Alfred's former-lover and assistant. Alfred first met her on the streets, begging for food. While he did invite her to his home, he intended to turn her into a doll once she was fed well enough. However, when she managed to heal another test subject that was on the verge of death, he recognized her medical skills would be useful to him and asked her to become his assistant. Maria happily accepted this, as no one had ever made her feel wanted or loved before. Maria became very devoted to his cause, which soon led to Alfred having an affair with her.

Throughout the game, Alfred gives the implication that he loves Maria more than his wife, since the two get along very well. However, during the endgame, when Maria lost sight of Aya - who was attempting to flee from Alfred upon learning he wanted to turn her into a doll - Alfred quickly turns on her, attacking her leg without a second thought while calling her "useless garbage." Learning that he may have never loved her, Maria switches sides with Aya after the young girl takes the time to save her life by bandaging her injured leg. She later "returns the favor" by throwing some of her knives at him when he was about to kill Aya, though her reaction afterwards implies it was a painful decision for her, since she still had some lingering feelings for her ex-lover.

Connections to "Misao"[]

MisaoDEAlfredDrevis

The unnamed scientist from Misao, who's heavily implied to be Alfred.

While not outright stated, it's implied that Alfred may have appeared as the unnamed scientist in Misao, which is a prior game that the creator of Mad Father worked on.

When the player enters the room where Yoshino is being held captive and attempts to save her, an unnamed scientist who bares a striking resemblance to Alfred (as he appears in the True Ending's bonus scene) shows up. This scientist is also shown wielding a chainsaw, just like Alfred.

The scientist's identity as Alfred Drevis is given more hints in version 3.00 of the game. If the player chats with Library - a woman who's implied to be the Aya Clone Alfred made - she mentions having a father who locks himself up in the lab all day doing experiments, just like what Alfred does in the Drevis Mansion's basement.

In Misao: Definitive Edition, if the player attempts to name Library "Aya," she rejects it, saying that only her father can call her that. Also of note is that the sprite sheets that contains the scientist are labelled "zombie_madfather." This would seem to outright confirm that the scientist is indeed Alfred.
