"You'd ask me that after all this time...? My resolve has not budged one bit since that night. I shall accompany you anywhere, mistress."

- Maria to Aya

Maria is the assistant and lover of Alfred Drevis and serves as one of the game's major characters. She's very loyal to Alfred and is willing to risk her life to save him from his late wife Monika Drevis, who has returned as a vengeful ghost.

Appearance[]

Maria is a young woman with shoulder-length dark brown hair that is tied in two braids, light green eyes, and red lipstick. She wears a green and white nurse's uniform with a pink choker and patent Mary Jane shoes.

Back when she was a teenager, Maria's hair was down, and she wore a sleeveless white shirt and a skirt of an unknown dark color.

In the True Ending, as well as in Blood Mode, Maria's appearance and clothing is similar to how she looked during Normal/IF Mode, though now she sports a few wrinkles underneath her eyes.

Personality[]

Maria is a very kindhearted woman who's most notable trait is her trust and loyalty. She becomes fully devoted to those who show her kindness and continue to do so, regardless of what kind of individual the person is. This is because she felt unwanted and unloved before Alfred took her in and made her feel loved and needed. However, once Maria's trust is betrayed, she loses all loyalty to the one who betrayed her.

Maria's diary reveals that she's a bit insecure about her eyes, as she notes that a young boy ran away crying upon seeing her face. She also notes that Aya seems to be scared of her as well ever since their first meeting, though also mentions the possibility that the young mistress hates her after the young girl found out about the relationship the maid has been having with the young girl's father, Alfred.

As revealed in the 2020 remake, one of Monika's hobbies appear to be dart-throwing, as she has a dartboard in her room. It's very possible that this hobby of hers helped improve her frightening accuracy and deadly precision when she throws knives at faraway individuals.

Despite being the family maid, Maria's character profile describes her as a freeloader, which may imply she only really serves Alfred when he requires her assistance, and mostly loafs around otherwise.

History[]

Prior to Mad Father[]

Maria was once a homeless vagrant living out on the streets. She was lying on the roads, feebly begging for someone to bring her some food. Alfred Drevis happened to be walking down the same street she was currently occupying, and upon noticing her, thought she would make an excellent doll with some work. Maria was then invited to come live with him in his mansion in order to receive some good food and clothes.

Maria was then asked to stay in one of the jail cells, as Alfred said he wanted to introduce her to his wife and his daughter - who was about to turn seven - later on. During her stay, she quickly spotted her roommate, and wondered if he too was taken in like her. Noticing he had grave injuries, she used what she could find, as well as her own shirt, to patch his wounds. The next day, her efforts to save her roommate impressed Alfred, and not wanting her talents to go to waste, offered to let her become his assistant. Having never felt wanted, needed, or loved before, Maria accepted his offer without a second thought.

From then on, Maria became fully devoted to Alfred, helping him turn other people he found into dolls. This devotion would soon turn into love, and the maid would begin having an affair with him behind his wife's back. In turn, Alfred lets Maria know about his plans to turn his own daughter into a doll, since he fears Aya is making the same mistakes he did in his youth and will turn out just as cruel as he is.

Maria did try to get to know the other members of the family better. However, Aya wasn't fond of her due to thinking her eyes looked creepy. It's unknown what Monika's initial thoughts on her were, but it soon became strained when she found out that her husband was cheating on her with Maria, to the point that Monika mostly tried to avoid Maria whenever possible.

About a year before the events of the game, Maria notes to Alfred about how Aya has become more ladylike, with Alfred noting that once she's "a little riper," they'll turn her into a doll. Unbeknown to them, Monika had overheard their conversation. While Maria was off cleaning up the "unnecessary materials," Monika confronted Alfred about this, which results in the mad man stabbing her in the chest, killing her. Upon returning, Maria rushes over to Monika begging her to hang on. Upon asking Alfred why he killed her, he simply responds that he did so "for Aya's future." He then instructs her to lie to Aya about Monika's death and claim she passed away from her illness. Maria hesitates on doing this, but reluctantly agrees to it, since she's loyal to the mad doctor.

During the events of Mad Father[]

As the anniversary of Monika's death draws near, Maria tells Alfred that Aya is aware of their relationship, and she voices her concerns that his daughter isn't fond of her. Alfred brushes her them aside and asks her to be kind to his daughter and make sure no harm befalls her. As midnight strikes, Monika returns as a vengeful ghost, incapacitating Maria and kidnapping Alfred.

When Aya makes it into the Basement 1F Laboratory, Maria instructs Aya to flee somewhere safe. She then reveals to Aya that Monika had returned from the grave and took him deeper into the Mansions depths before passing out from exhaustion. If the player has Aya examine Maria twice afterwards, the young girl finds Maria's room key.

Eventually, Maria regains consciousness and begins her journey into the mansion's depths. Upon making it to the Chapel, she sees a mysterious blonde boy pulling on Aya's hands. Assuming he's an enemy, Maria throws some knifes at him to incapacitate him, then approaches the young girl to once again insist that Aya should flee to somewhere safe while promising to bring Alfred back. Aya insists on tagging along, but Maria rebuffs saying that her father would mourn her if something happened to her. Suddenly, the door to the next area opens, with Maria noting that Monika must be greeting her before continuing onward.

Maria is then seen at the Other World, lying face-down on the floor, having presumably lost her battle against Monika. Once Aya uses some Magic Water she obtained on her mother, Maria, Aya, and Alfred are sent back to the Drevis Mansion. When Maria regains consciousness and gets up, Aya nearly bumps into her. Alfred quickly arrives and yells at Maria to not let Aya get away. Before she can fully react, Aya runs off, with Maria giving chase.

At the Mortuary, Maria briefly looks around until Alfred approaches. She then apologizes for having lost sight of Aya. Alfred then begins prepping his chainsaw, clearly displeased with her response. Having never angered him before, this reaction causes Maria to start panicking, apologizing profusely before noting that Aya couldn't have gone too far, insisting that they look elsewhere. Her words fall on deaf ears, as Alfred slashes at her legs in rage while referring to her as "useless garbage" before journeying further on. Feeling hurt and betrayed by the doctor's actions, Maria lies on the ground in pain.

Luckily for her, Aya was hiding nearby, and decided to bandage her injured leg. Maria thanks Aya for her kindness, with Aya stating that she feels betrayed by her father as well. She then offers Maria to tag along with her to start a new life together, to which Maria agrees to follow her. As they slowly make their escape, Maria collapses. Worried that she was slowing Aya down, she insists to the young girl to flee without her, promising that she'll catch up as soon as she can. Although hesitant, Aya complies and runs off, after which Maria gets kicked to the side by Alfred.

Maria manages to quickly recover and witnesses her ex-lover preparing to finish Aya off. She quickly throws her knives at Alfred and dispatches him, as well as a small doll who was holding on to Aya's ankle. The two then mourn Alfred's death before the mad doctor makes his own swift recovery and attempts to strike the two down, though he's quickly killed by the timely arrival of Robin. Following that, Aya passes out from exhaustion and shock.

At the end of the game, Robin sets the mansion ablaze to ensure that no one else can use the Drevis Family research to hurt more people, after which he gives Aya a kiss on the forehead, wishing her eternal happiness. Maria, Aya, and Aya's pet rabbit Snowball watch the mansion blaze for a bit before setting off. Maria notes how Aya has recovered from the harsh events that happened pretty quickly and feels that she can overcome anything with Aya at her side. However, she then notes a feeling of unease, unaware that Aya has managed to find a mysterious red book that belonged to her father, as well as the fact that another mysterious individual has revived Alfred and has taken the mad doctor to live with him in his world.

A few years later, Maria and Aya are living deep in the woods together, where they run a clinic. While off presumably visiting a far-off town, Maria offers a young woman named Jean Rooney a ride to the Drevis Clinic, taking her part of the way there before they go their separate ways. During Aya and Jean's chat, Maria arrives back at the clinic, and enters through the back. As Aya applies anesthesia to Jean while promising to end the woman's pain, Maria, in another room that has a few dolls in it, remarks that Aya is much like her father.

While this implies that Aya is continuing the Drevis family tradition of turning people into dolls, a scene included in the 2.02 version - as well as the 2020 remake - that only plays if one collects all 21 Gems (in the 2.02 version) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake) reveals that she isn't doing so out of respect for the people who suffered under her father, and is simply using her medical knowledge and anesthesia to kill patients with terminal illnesses to "end their suffering."

During the events of IF Mode[]

After Robin saves Maria and Aya from Alfred, Aya passes out. Maria and Robin decide to take her back to Aya's bedroom so she can rest a bit. Inside, Aya and Robin have a short discussion, with Maria apologizing for attacking him early on. The two then hear Aya mumbling in her sleep. telling Maria that they should always be together, which makes Maria a bit happy. Maria then wonders what she and Aya should do now, as well as what Robin will do. Robin informs her that he's only alive due to Monika's curse, and since she's now gone, he'll be returning to his eternal rest soon. Maria laments being unable to help him, but Robin assures her he always knew this was his fate, and he's okay with it. As Robin prepares to leave to hang out in another room for a bit, he asks Maria to live and protect Aya, as that was Monika's wish. Maria then notes to herself that he shouldn't worry, since she's already decided to support Aya.

At some point while Robin is having his individual chats with Monika, the Old Man, and Ogre, Aya wakes up. She and Maria have their own discussion and decide to leave the mansion behind and start a new life together. The three head into the foyer along with Aya's pet rabbit Snowball, which the young girl apologizes to for nearly forgetting about him. Robin would then approach the two, happy to see Aya recovered. Aya gives the boy a shy response before running off, which Maria apologizes for. Maria informs Robin of her and Aya's plans before noticing that Robin looks troubled. He then informs her to be weary of "the red-eyed man in the black coat," feeling that he might put Aya's life in danger, which Maria promises to bear in mind.

After that, Robin sets the mansion ablaze to ensure that no one else can use the Drevis Family research to hurt more people, after which he gives Aya a kiss on the forehead, wishing her eternal happiness.

During the events of Blood Mode[]

As Maria is busy hanging a wreath in their house, Aya rushes in to show her assistant a weird-colored apple a mysterious old woman in a black coat gave to her. Maria warns her that the whole thing sounds suspicious, but Aya brushes her assistant's warnings aside and takes a bite, after which she passes out. Maria then rushes Aya to bed and gives her an antidote, praying she'll be alright.

While Aya's soul explores the familiar recreation of the infamous night from long ago, she comes across an illusion of Maria and Alfred in the Basement 1F Laboratory. Alfred tells Maria that should anything happen to him, he entrusts everything to her, which includes watching over his daughter in his stead. Maria ensures him that she'll protect Aya's future, and no one will stand in her way, not even Monika. Alfred gives a light chuckle, noting how strong she's become.

Near the end of the mode, when Aya's soul almost allows her father's lingering spirit to kill her so that she can be reunited with him and Monika, she manages to hear Maria crying out for her. This makes her realize she'd be leaving Maria behind if she went through with it, and instead uses some Magic Water to calm Alfred down.

Once Aya's soul returns to her body, Aya wakes up and spots Maria sitting on a chair beside her bed. Maria is grateful that the antidote worked before she begins yelling at her mistress for doing something so stupid, worrying what she would've done had she lost Aya. She then promises to hunt down the old woman who gave her the poisoned apple and terminate her, only for Aya to tell her there's no need, as she she's certain that the old woman was actually a death god who sought to deliver karma to her. Hearing that upsets Maria, a little. Aya continues by saying they probably couldn't escape, no matter how hard they try, and resigns herself to whatever fate has in store for her. She then asks if Maria would still stand by her side, which surprises Maria, who re-assures her that she's just as loyal to her as she was long ago. Aya then smiles in response.

Relationships[]

Alfred Drevis[]

Alfred is Maria's former boss and ex-lover. Out of everyone in the Drevis family, she's most loyal to him, and is willing to do anything to please him, which includes killing Aya Drevis to honor is last request in "Bad Ending 1." This devotion stems from Alfred taking her in off the streets and making her his assistant, which made her feel wanted and needed, something she never really received in her life.

However, following Alfred betraying her trust and calling her "useless garbage," Maria lost all the loyalty she had for him. In the "True Ending," she returns the favor by attacking him with her knifes when he intended to kill Aya, though it's implied that doing so was a painful decision for her, since she still had some lingering feelings for her former lover.

Aya Drevis[]

Aya is Maria's mistress. When they first met, Maria tried to get to know Aya, but the young girl mostly kept her distance from her, due to finding her eyes "creepy looking." Aya further disliked her when she discovered that she was having an affair with her father. Despite that, Maria could understand why Aya disliked her, and mostly accepted it. Regardless, Maria was still willing to watch out and care for the mistress in any way she could.

In "Bad Ending 1," Maria ends up knocking out Aya and turns her into a doll to honor Alfred's last request, due to Maria still being loyal to him since the mad doctor hasn't betrayed her here.

In the "True Ending," Aya decides to rescue Maria after the maid had been betrayed by her father, as she too felt betrayed by him. This act of kindness, especially since Maria assumed Aya hated her, causes her to switch her loyalty to the young girl. Indeed, by the time Aya has grown into an adult, Maria still remains loyal to her. though she does express some sadness at the fact that she's somewhat similar to her father.

Monika Drevis[]

Monika and Maria have a rather-strained relationship, due to Maria having an affair with Monika's husband. In spite of that, Maria held no ill thoughts towards Monika, respectfully referring to her as "Milady" and even appeared visibly distraught when she discovered her being gravely wounded.

For her part, Monika never confronted the two about their relationship, and simply tried to avoid Maria whenever she could. She also didn't try to seek revenge against her when she came back as a ghost. "IF Mode" reveals that Monika spared Maria in order to have her look after their daughter since Alfred is now gone.

Robin[]

Maria starts off on the wrong foot with Robin. She initially assumes he was an enemy trying to bring harm to Aya and attacks him with her knives without a second thought. She even thoughtlessly walks on top of him as he lied down on the floor in pain. However, after Robin saved her and Aya from Alfred, she changes her opinion on him and apologizes for acting so hastily. Maria also laments being unable to help him when Robin informs her that, with Monika defeated and her curse dispelled, he'll return to his eternal rest.

Trivia[]

  • The name Maria means "sea of bitterness" or "sea of sorrow".
    • However, some sources cite the alternative definitions of "rebellion", "wished-for child" and "mistress or lady of the sea".
