Aya is a little girl who lives in northern Germany. Since her mother's passed away, she's felt lonely living with just her father and his assistant Maria. What's more, she knows her father's secret...

- Mad Father Description

Aya Drevis is the game's main protagonist and the sole daughter of Alfred Drevis and Monika Drevis. Alongside her parents and their maid Maria, Aya lives within a large mansion that makes up the setting for the majority of the game.

Appearance[]

Aya is a beautiful pale-skinned little girl with long dark hair that has straight bangs with a large pink bow tied in the back and light blue eyes (which she inherited from her mother Monika Drevis).

During the game, Aya is seen wearing a white apron over a dark lapis dress that has long and puffed sleeves the upper part with white fists, a gold pendant around her neck, white cuffs, white pantyhose and black Mary Jane shoes.

In the past, Aya had shoulder-length hair that is tied in two pigtails by two blue ribbons. She wore a pale blue dress over a white dress shirt, white pantyhose and black Mary Jane shoes.

In the True Ending, as well as Blood Mode, Aya is now a beautiful adult who has chin-length short hair, and she no longer wears a ribbon. Her attire is a white apron over a light blue dress, white pantyhose and black Mary Jane shoes.

In Bad Ending 1, where she gets turned into a doll, the 2020 remake sees her wearing a purplish-red floor-length dress with white, ruffled cuffs with gold hems; a pink bow tied to the left side of her chest with similarly colored ribbons on her elbows; a purplish-red collar with a gold gem on it, and a pinkish-white bow tied to the back of her hair. She also sports dull, emotionless eyes.

The original version of the Aya doll's appearance sees her wearing a red floor-length dress with white, ruffled cuffs; gold hems; a pink bow tied to the left side of her chest; a red collar with a gold gem on it; and a white ribbon on the back of her hair. Just like the 2020 remake, she also sports dull, emotionless eyes.

Personality[]

Aya Drevis is a compassionate and kindhearted girl who loves and admires her family, and even values things that previously belonged to one of her relatives, such as Monika's perfume. In fact, her love and protectiveness for her family is one of the most powerful driving forces in the game; this is what primarily aided her in persevering throughout the whole journey to save her father, despite witnessing numerous things that would usually drive even an adult to insanity. She is also level-headed and bright, being able to solve tricky puzzles and efficiently wield a chainsaw at a tender age.

Despite knowing what is going on in her father's basement, she chooses to feign ignorance, as she believes her father is a good person. The same goes for her mother as well, as despite Monika plotting revenge against Alfred, Aya refuses to believe her mother is deranged and is willing to save her from her suffering. Although she is definitely more mentally capable than an average person, she is still a naive child at heart who urgently hopes that her love will reach through to her parents and hinder the madness in the Drevis Mansion, despite how far gone both of her parents are.

Initially, Aya is shown to only care about herself and her family, with little to no regard for others. Some diary entries written by her mother Monika, as well as an early scene in Blood Mode, reveal that when she was young, Aya often killed animals for fun or curiosity. Her behavior was subtly encouraged by her mother, who wanted Aya to become just like her husband, Alfred, in order to continue her grandfather's - and by extension, her family's - long-sought ambition of obtaining "eternal beauty." In contrast, her father tried to dissuade Aya from that and would try to teach her what she was doing was wrong in order to prevent her from going down the same path as him.

However, her experiences throughout the night, as well as her encounters with her father's test subjects. cause Aya to start showing others sympathy and compassion, such as cooking some food for a starving boy or reuniting a mother with her daughter. This even extends towards Maria, whom Aya initially despised due to finding her eyes creepy, as well as thinking that the maid was stealing her father away from her and was attempting to take her mother's place. However, after having read her diary, Aya begins to understand her better, and becomes willing to help her after Maria gets betrayed by her father during the True Ending.

In the True Ending, as well as in Blood Mode, Aya has grown to become much more mature and wiser young woman who still retains the compassion and empathy she gained from her past experiences, though she still has the occasional bits of naivety. She's become a doctor and runs a clinic alongside her assistant Maria deep within the woods, where they offer free check-ups to patients.

In the original version of the game, it was vague on whether or not Aya was continuing the Drevis family tradition of turning people into dolls. However, a bonus scene included in the 2.02 version, as well as the 2020 remake, reveals that she isn't. This is due to her quietly promising Robin that she would never forget the people who suffered under her father and is simply using her medical knowledge and anesthesia to kill patients with terminal illnesses to "end their suffering."

Aya's favorite food is stated to be hamburger steak in the original version of the game, but the 2.02 version changes it to sirloin steak. The 2020 remake retains this change as well.

History[]

Prior to Mad Father[]

Aya was born in northern Germany and spent almost eleven years within the confines of her family's mansion. Despite this, as well as the peculiarities of her family, she had a good childhood that she reflects on fondly. Throughout most of her life, her mother, Monika, often encouraged her to kill animals and play with the mini chainsaw, in hopes of having her grow up to become just like her father Alfred so that she may continue the legacy her grandfather left her with. In contrast, Alfred tries to raise her to be a good person and attempts to teach her right from wrong.

At some point, Aya was given a pet rabbit, whom she names Snowball. While Aya loves him dearly, she often played too rough with him, giving him fatal injuries. In spite of that, he always appeared to make swift recoveries, thanks to her father. In reality, her original pet had died some time ago. Alfred had been cloning Snowball after every grave injury and has been giving them to her as replacements in the hopes that she would treat him better next time.

When Aya was about to turn seven years old, Alfred takes in a young woman named Maria, who becomes the family's maid and Alfred's assistant. Aya doesn't take a liking to her, finding the young woman's eyes rather creepy looking.

Presumably around this time, Alfred would give Aya a doll as a present for her. Aya was instantly smitten with it, noting how pretty the doll was, as well as how it looked like it was "almost alive," unaware that her initial thoughts were the exact origins of her new doll.

Sometime later, Aya would discover that her father is cheating on her mother with Maria, which worsens her already low opinion on the maid. Her mother quickly learns of this as well, but neither one confronts the two about this.

About a year before the events of the game, Aya's life takes a slight turn for the worse as her mother passes away. Due to how close her father and Maria are, Aya worriedly assumes that Maria is trying to replace Monika as her mother. Although her father does try to be there for her, it's clear that Monika's death has heavily affected Aya.

Sometime after that, her father adopts a young blond boy named Robin, who had lost his family in an accident. Alfred insists that the young boy view him and Aya as family, in spite of the boy initially being reluctant to do so. Aya was never aware of the boy's presence, as their sole interaction with each other happened while she was asleep. Thus, when her father eventually used him as part of his experiments, she was none the wiser.

During the events of Mad Father[]

During the eve of the anniversary of her mother's death, Aya is unable to sleep due to being too scared, so she decides to visit her father in the basement. When he opens the door, Alfred assures her she isn't alone, as her late mother is always by her side watching her. He then tells her to hurry back to bed and promises her that they'll visit her mother's grave in the morning.

On the stroke of midnight, Aya finds herself unable to sleep, and decides to look around her room for a little bit. Eventually, she feels a chill in the air, and decides to go back to sleep, during which she dreams of the time where she got to play with her father before her mother announces that she made Aya's favorite for supper.

Aya's dreams are soon interrupted by the sounds of her father screaming. Concerned about him, she decides to investigate, only to come face-to-face with some monsters roaming about her home. She suddenly hears a mysterious voice calling out to her, and runs in that direction, where she learns the voice belongs to a mysterious blonde boy. However, upon noticing that he's missing an eye, Aya runs back to her bedroom in fear.

Inside, she encounters a strange individual named Ogre, who claims to be a wandering salesman. He reveals that the monsters are her father's test subjects, who have come back to life thanks to a curse. Upon hearing that they're seeking to get revenge on Alfred, Aya decides to journey past them all to rescue him, in spite of Ogre informing her that this was Alfred's retribution for what he had done to them.

During her quest, she would come across many tortured individuals who had it out for her and her father. However, not all of them did so, and some were even willing to help her out. In turn, Aya would help them out with their problems, during which she would start to grow compassion and empathy for others. In the process, she would slowly learn of her father's darkest secrets.

Upon arriving in the Basement 1F Laboratory, she would run into Maria, who tries to convince Aya to flee. She then reveals that Aya's mother, Monika, had returned from the grave as a ghost and has taken Alfred somewhere with her, but before Maria can say anything else, she passes out from exhaustion. Before Aya leaves to investigate Maria's claims, she finds a key on the maid and decides to take it with her.

At the nearby Incubation Room, Aya finds her father, but is more surprised to see the ghost of her mother there as well. Aya cries out to her, but her mother ignores her, dragging Alfred with her deeper into the Mansion's depths. Ogre arrives and reveals that Monika was the one who cast the curse upon the mansion. Aya initially refuses to believe it, as her mother loved Alfred, but then considers that maybe she hated how he was spending time with Maria. Uncertain, Aya decides to head off to discover the truth.

A bit later on, Aya would find a sad-looking ghost that leads her to Maria's room. Using the key she took from the maid earlier, she discovers Maria's diary and reads it, learning why Maria is completely devoted to Alfred: he saved her from near-death four years ago, and was the first one to show her love and kindness, as well as made her feel needed. Realizing she never knew much about Maria and was wrong with her assumptions, Aya comes to understand the maid a little better.

Deeper in the Mansion's depths, Aya nearly gets choked to death by a ghost. She manages to escape, after which she passes out. When she comes to, she finds herself in the Basement 2F Chapel, where the blonde boy from before - who she learns is named Robin - is glad to see she's alright. He once again tries to get her to leave with him, but she refuses, wanting to save her father. Robin tries to convince her it's pointless, only to get hit by a few knives thrown by Maria, who mistakenly assumed he was trying to hurt Aya. Maria tries to convince Aya to flee, promising that she'll retrieve Alfred before heading off to confront Monika. Before Aya follows after her, Robin shows the young girl a vision, back when he was adopted into the Drevis family after his own family died from an accident. This makes Aya feel a bit sad over his story, as well as guilty for never noticing he was there.

A bit later, after a frightening encounter with a long-haired woman, Aya passes out once again in the Basement 3F Corner Passage. She has a dream about the time her mother kissed her on the forehead while saying "may you always be smiled upon," which the older woman claimed was a good luck charm. Upon waking up, she spots a very skinny and pale girl named Ines, who has stolen her mother's perfume bottle. Aya chases her to get it back, after which she discovers that Ines wanted to use it to try and befriend a mouse, though all it does make the mouse even more frightened of her. After getting the perfume back, Aya would use this info to get past a rat-infested section of the basement.

As she approaches the entrance to the Basement 3F Laboratory, a rather creepy-looking doll halts her progress through the use of an invisible barrier. Ines informs her that she has to burn the doll up really good in order to get past the barrier, so Aya picks the doll up and tries to follow Ines, though the pale girl manages to get very far ahead of her. When Aya finally does catch up, Ines has been fatally wounded by several of the dolls in the Tunnels Incinerator Room. Ines then reveals to Aya, via a vision, that she was adopted into the Drevis family many years ago. Alfred even introduced her to a young infant Aya, saying that she would be Aya's big sister, but eventually he betrayed Ines's trust and killed her, taking her legs. Upon learning this, Aya solemnly apologizes as Ines fades away.

After disposing of the Creepy Doll, Aya prepares to enter the unguarded entrance to the Basement 3F Laboratory. However, a mysterious voice suddenly asks her why she's still attempting to save her father after learning about everything he's done. Aya responds she isn't sure what to do but will support her father regardless because that's what she promised her mom. The voice then points out that Monika appears to have forgotten all about the promise since she's torturing him, but this doesn't faze Aya. After the voice tells her that more people will get hurt if Alfred lives, Aya responds that she'll get him to stop what he's doing, claiming that her father is a kind man, so she knows he can change. As the young girl heads onward, the mysterious voice is revealed to be Aya's doll, who comments on Aya's naive belief.

Inside the Basement 3F Laboratory, Aya discovers a portal that leads to the "Other World." Before she heads in, Ogre arrives, and upon hearing how determined she is to save both of her parents, gives her some Magic Water. He tells her it's a new product from his company, and it has the power to seal away the power of the curse and rescue both of her parents. Leaving behind her lantern and mini-chainsaw, Aya jumps into the portal.

At the Other World, Aya finds her parents, as well as Maria, who has passed out from her battle against Aya's mother. Monika claims she's trying to stop Alfred from killing others, but Aya doesn't believe it since she knows her mother knew Alfred better than anyone. Aya then claims that her mother was actually mad that Alfred was hanging out with Maria more, which Monika decides to run with, replying that she wants Alfred to herself. Aya wants to come with her, but Monika refuses, as she wants her daughter to live a happy life. The young girl then manages to pull Alfred away from Monika, during which she has to decide whether to save her father or respect her mother's wish. Ultimately, Aya chooses to save her father, and uses the Magic Water to try and sooth her mother's soul. As her mother fades away, Aya, Alfred, and Maria return to the mansion.

Happy that things seemed to have turned out okay, Aya hugs her father while he tells her they'll visit her mother's grave first thing in the morning to further help ease her soul. However, Monika uses the last of her powers to reveal to Aya that Alfred was the one responsible for killing her. He did so because he wanted to turn Aya into a doll, which Monika was against. This news startles the young girl, and as she tries to slowly back away from the rather confused Alfred, she inadvertently discovers her mother's corpse. Since she now knows the truth, Alfred begins to rave about preserving her beauty forever, even nonchalantly asking her what kind of doll she would like to be. Managing to put some distance between her and her father, Aya attempts to escape, not wanting to become a doll, with her father giving chase.

Aya would nearly bump into Maria, who had arrived back at the mansion in a different part of the room. As her father shouts at Maria to not let Aya escape, the young girl quickly dashes past the maid before she could fully process what was asked of her. Arriving at the Basement 2F Mortuary, Aya decides to hide on top of an unoccupied table underneath a blanket and act like one of various corpses in the room, which manages to fool Maria and Alfred.

However, because Maria failed to catch Aya and lost sight of her, Alfred calls her "useless garbage" and attacks his lover's leg in rage with his chainsaw before storming on ahead. Feeling pity for the maid, Aya decides to take a few minutes to save Maria's life and bandages her wounds. She then offers Maria to come with her and start a new life together, since they were both betrayed by Alfred, to which Maria agrees. Aya then helps support Maria as they attempt to make their escape.

However, it isn't long before Maria collapses once again. Concerned that she was slowing them down, Maria insists Aya to run on ahead of her, promising to catch up as soon as she can. Although hesitant, the young girl decides to do so and ends up in the Chapel, where a doll grabs her ankle. Alfred then catches up and promises that he and Aya will be together forever now. As he prepares to kill his daughter, Maria arrives in the nick of time and throws some of her knives at him, saving her. While the two were mourning over his death, Alfred manages to make a swift recovery and attempts to strike both of them down, only to get quickly killed by the timely arrival of Robin. After all of this, Aya passes out from exhaustion and shock.

At the end of the game, Robin sets the mansion ablaze to ensure that no one else can use the Drevis Family research to hurt more people, after which he gives Aya a kiss on the forehead, wishing her eternal happiness. Aya, Maria, and Aya's pet rabbit Snowball watch the mansion blaze for a bit before setting off, though not before Aya discovers a familiar-looking red book that belonged to her father...

A few years later, Aya and Maria are living deep in the woods together, where they run a clinic. A woman named Jean Rooney journeys to their residence to seek aid, as her doctors have more-or-less given up on her due to her lack of funds. Aya tells the woman that she does check-ups for free, and invites her in. Once Jean lies down on the one of the tables, Aya notes that the woman's eyes are quite beautiful. Jean thanks her for the compliment before asking if she could help make her feel better. Aya promises that Jean won't suffer anymore as she applies anesthesia. In another room that has a few dolls in it, Maria solemnly remarks that Aya is much like her father, which may imply that she's continuing where her father left off.

However. in the 2.02 version of the game, as well as the 2020 remake, should the player obtain all 21 Gems (in the original version) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake), an additional scene plays after the credits. Aya is seen hugging one of the dolls from her collection, before remarking to herself that she promised Robin that she wouldn't forget the people who were sacrificed by the hands of her father. This suggests she isn't turning people into dolls out of respect for the victims of her father and is simply killing her terminally ill patients to end their suffering.

During the events of IF Mode[]

After Robin saves Aya and Maria from Alfred, Aya passes out. Robin and Maria decide to take the young girl back to her bedroom so she can rest a bit. During their small chat, the two hear Aya mumbling in her sleep. telling Maria that they should always be together.

At some point while Robin is having his individual chats with Monika's ghost, an Old Man, and Ogre, Aya wakes up. She and Maria have their own discussion and decide to leave the mansion behind and start a new life together. As the two head into the foyer, Aya apologizes to her loyal pet rabbit for forgetting that he's always been at her side while she was scared of being alone. Robin then approaches the three, happy to see that Aya recovered. Aya gives the boy a shy response before hurrying down the stairs. After that, Robin sets the mansion ablaze to ensure that no one else can use the Drevis Family research to hurt more people, after which he gives Aya a kiss on the forehead, wishing her eternal happiness.

During the events of Blood Mode[]

Aya receives an odd-colored apple from a mysterious old woman in a black hood, and eagerly shows it to Maria. Despite her assistant's warnings, Aya decides to take a bite from it and passes out. When she awakens, she discovers she's back in the Drevis Mansion, during the night of her mother's curse. Ogre reveals to her that her soul is trapped in a world created by Alfred's lingering feelings for her, and that if she wishes to wake up, she has to get to the source and make peace with him.

As Aya relives key moments from the event, the ghost of Jean Rooney occasionally pops up, and even attempts to drown her at one point. Eventually, Jean's ghost confronts Aya and asks her why she killed her, revealing that she aspired to become a doctor to help others just like Aya. Aya never gives her a response, though it's somewhat implied that she's shaken by what Jean said. Aya then continues her trip throughout the Drevis Mansion.

Additionally, Aya finds out some dark secrets about her mother as well. While coming across her Charm Encyclopedia, she finds an additional chapter that talks about increasing the odds to birth a boy, implying she wanted to have a son instead. Much later, she learns that Monika wasn't exactly sane during her youth, as she enjoyed writing letters to various killers and murderers to learn more about them. Monika was also part of a cult that was led by her grandfather, who's dream of creating "eternal beauty" led to the discovery of turning people into dolls. Monika was eager to continue his work until her grandmother told her that "true beauty" was leaving descendants for the future. Not wanting to disappoint either of them, she decided to compromise their separate wishes and give birth to her daughter, Aya, whom she planned to have continue her grandfather's legacy.

Eventually, she confronts her father's lingering will at the Secret Room, who attempts to kill Aya to turn her into a doll just like how the original attempted. Though Aya does flee, she briefly relents upon arriving at the Chapel, having decided to let Alfred kill her so that she could be reunited with him and Monika. However, upon hearing Maria's voice, she realizes she'd be leaving her all alone. Thus, she uses the Magic Water she obtained from Monika's ghost earlier and uses it on her father. She then tells him that she now understands why he wanted to turn her into a doll. However, she wants to continue to live, due to all that she experienced long ago, saying that she can't forget it no matter how hard she tries, claiming it must be part of the curse of the Drevis family. Before her soul leaves and returns to her body, Alfred's lingering will wish Aya to be happy with her life.

Back in her clinic, Aya wakes up to see Maria sitting nearby. The brunette scolds Aya for acting so hastily, before vowing to terminate the old woman who gave Aya that poisoned apple. Aya tells her there's no need, as she's certain that the old woman was actually a death god who sought to deliver karma to her. Admitting that they likely couldn't escape no matter how hard they try, Aya resigns herself to whatever fate has in store for her. She then asks if Maria would still stay by her side in spite of everything. Maria confirms that she's just as loyal to her as she was long ago, so Aya gives her assistant a smile.

Relationships[]

Alfred Drevis[]

Alfred is Aya's father. Despite having a general idea of what he does in the basement, she still loves him in spite of it. Throughout her quest, she continues to show concern for Alfred's safety in spite of what was going on and was willing to brave past it all to rescue him. For his part, Alfred viewed Aya as his treasure and adored her. He also wished for her to not go down the same path as him, and he realized she was beginning to, he took steps to prevent it by teaching her right from wrong, as well as dissuade her from killing things for fun.

In the True Ending, as well as Bad Ending 2, Aya finds out that Alfred wants to turn her into a doll to preserve her innocence when it became apparent that she was going to turn out just like him. He even killed Monika when she learned of his plans, and had Maria cover up her death by claiming Monika died due to her illness. Although Aya does attempt to flee from her father, since she doesn't want to become a doll, Blood Mode reveals that Aya still loves him in spite of it all and was even willing to let him kill her so she could finally be with him and her mother. However, she changes her mind upon hearing Maria's voice, as she didn't want her assistant to be left all alone.

Monika Drevis[]

Monika was Aya's mother, who the young girl loved her just as much as her father. Although she passed away about a year before the events of the game, it's obvious that Aya still mourns her death, and can't see anyone else taking her place. Aya is initially led to believe that Monika passed away from her illness, though in the True Ending - as well as Bad Ending 2 - she finds out that her father was the one responsible for killing her.

For her part, Monika attempted to groom Aya into becoming just like her husband, whether it be from reading her dark story books - like The Red-Eyed Stranger - or less-subtle methods like allowing her to play with a mini-chainsaw. All of this was because Monika wanted to honor her grandfather's wish of obtaining "eternal beauty" by turning people into dolls to preserve their beauty, as well as honor her grandmother's wish to leave a descendant to the future.

In spite of this, Monika does appear to genuinely love her daughter, as when she learned that her husband intended to turn Aya into a doll, she attempted to confront him about this, which ultimately lead to her death.

Maria[]

Maria is Aya's maid, and later her assistant. At first, Aya simply disliked Maria due to finding her eyes rather creepy. However, she soon begins to hate her upon learning that she's having an affair with her father, assuming that the maid is attempting to replace Monika as her mother. In spite of this, during the events of Bad Ending 1 - where Aya allows Monika to drag Alfred away with her to the afterlife - the young girl offers to let Maria live with her at the mansion, only to get knocked out cold in response, due to Maria wanting to honor the doctor's last request about turning Aya into a doll.

However, in the True Ending, Aya comes to understand Maria a bit better after finding and reading her diary, causing her to realize she didn't know much about the maid from her initial assumptions. Towards the end of the game, Aya decides to save Maria after her father callously attacked her leg with his chainsaw. She then tells the maid that they've both have been betrayed by them, so now they only have each other, resulting in the two forming a close bond. In the future, Maria is saddened that Aya has become somewhat like her father, but her loyalty and affection towards her mistress doesn't waver.

Snowball[]

Snowball is Aya's pet rabbit. She's shown to be rather concerned and protective of him, seeing him as a valuable member of her family. In return, Snowball helps her out by obtain either some lighter fuel (in the original version) or some wire (in the 2020 remake) in the storeroom in an early part of the game.

In spite of her love for her pet, Aya tended to be too rough while playing with him, often giving him fatal injuries. Although it appeared he tended to make swift recoveries thanks to her father, the reality was that her original pet died long ago; her father having cloned the rabbit many times to replace the current Snowball whenever Aya gave him a grave injury. Aya would eventually learn of this upon reaching the Basement 2F Laboratory, where she discovers various canisters containing white rabbits sporting all of the injuries that she worried about with Snowball.

In the game's True Ending, Aya decides to leave the mansion with Snowball and Maria. At some point between that and Aya growing into an adult, Snowball had passed away. During Blood Mode, Aya is happy about being able to briefly reunite with her beloved pet rabbit.

Robin[]

Robin is initially believed to be one of the corpses raised by the curse. Prior to the start of the game, Alfred took him in and insisted to the young boy to view him and his daughter Aya as family. In spite of that, Aya never really interacted with him, thus she never knew about him.

When Aya first meets him, she becomes terrified of him after noticing he's missing his right eye and flees. When she encounters him much later on, he's covered up his wounds with bandages, resulting in the girl being less frightened of him. When he attempts to convince her to leave with him, she refuses, being adamant on staying to rescue her father. When Robin later shows her a vision of his first few days of living with them, she becomes upset at never noticing he was living with her.

Near the game's finale in the True Ending, Robin rescues her and Maria from Alfred, who performed a last-ditch attempt at killing the two. IF Mode implies that Aya has grown a small crush on him for this, as she suddenly becomes very shy when he approaches her, in contrast to their previous meetings.

During Blood Mode, Aya briefly encounters an illusion of Robin, and is happy to meet him again. Once the illusion vanishes, she solemnly wonders how her life would've turned out had she followed him instead of running away back then.

Ines[]

One of the corpses raised by the curse. Aya indirectly meets her in the Storeroom Entrance - after Snowball obtains the lighter fuel/wire - during which she peers over Aya's shoulder, though Aya brushes the whole thing off as her mind playing tricks on her, since Ines vanished after Aya turned around.

The two properly meet in the Private Room in Basement 3F, where Ines steals a perfume bottle belonging to Monika from the black-haired girl, thus causing Aya to hate her. In spite of that, Ines decides to help Aya by telling her how to get past the Creepy Doll's barrier. This action results in her being killed by the other dolls in retaliation, after which she reveals to Aya that she just wanted to be a part of her family. Although Aya shows no emotion over this in the original version of the game, the Steam edition - as well as the 2020 remake - has Aya give a solemn "I'm sorry..." after she witnesses Ines's flashback.

Ogre[]

A mysterious man who occasionally helps Aya out during her quest to save her father. Aya mostly views him as a strange guy, though the True Ending implies that Aya has grown somewhat concerned for him, hoping he made it out of the burning house safely, before following it up with the belief that he did since "he's such a mysterious guy." When she encounters him years later during the events of Blood Mode, she expresses relief that he did survive.

Etymology[]

  • Her name Aya has many meanings depending on the different languages:
    • In Japanese, it means "Color" (彩), "Design" (綾) or "Brilliant Fabric Design, Kimono Design" (絢).
    • In Akkadian, it means "Dawn".
      • In Akkadian mythology, Aya was a mother goddess, the consort of the Sun god Shamash and associated strongly with the rising Sun, sexual love and youth. The Babylonians sometimes called her Kallatu meaning "The Bride". She developed from the Sumerian goddess Sherida.
    • In Modern Hebrew, it means "The Beautiful Land of Israel" (Hebrew: ארץ ישראל היפה)
    • In Arabic, it means "Sign, evidence" or "verse" (ayah) as in one of the passages that make up the Quran.

Trivia[]

  • Although Alfred states that Aya will turn 11 soon at the beginning of Normal Mode, the description for the game on Steam, as well as Nintendo Switch, describes her as 11 years old. This could either be a mistake or implies that Aya's birthday also happens to be on the day her mother passed away.
  • The bookshelves in Aya's room contain books that are dark in nature for a young girl to read. The Dark Quartet features morbid themes about death and torture, while Horus the Trader and The Red-Eyed Stranger allude to the 'salesman' Ogre.
    • As of Version 2, The Dark Quartet has been removed for unknown reasons.
  • At the end of Normal Mode, if the player has managed to obtain all 21 Gems (in the original/2.02 version) or 20 Gems (in the remake), a bonus scene plays that reveals that her father - who has been taken to another world where Ogre hails from - has managed to make an older clone of her.
